Here are our new babies, growing fast already in this morning's sun.
Been coolish for high summer, but lucky with the showers here. The fruit set took a couple of weeks, but looks good. The berries are more even than last year's horror-July ones .
Managing the leaf canopy is our priority now, making sure these babies get loads of sun and air. We're trimming off the soft growth at the row-tops to make sure it doesn't overhang, using the lightweight battery hedge-trimmer. It's a trade-off when to do it, because once you cut the leading tips off, the side-shoots grow madly, close to the the fruit. But we have been caught before leaving it too long and then you get a tough tangle tumbling down, the vines trying to hold hands across the alleys. So this year we're going for little and often, trying to get to the growth while it's soft enough for the light trimmer.
