Growing Season: Budburst was unusually early after a mild winter. There was a spring frost on 27th April but it was thankfully slight (-1C for an hour) and although we lost a few buds in the bottom corner of the Madeleine Angevine the effect on the yield was not significant. The fruit-set was early, quick and even because of the early start plus a hot spell at the end of June and start of July at flowering.  It was our earliest harvest ever, 17th September, and even so the grapes were riper than we normally pick the Madeleine. We aim to harvest slightly green to give a fresher wine.

Harvest: 17th Sep 2017. Grapes pictured above, were in excellent condition The trailer was under a marquee to ensure the grapes stayed dry andpout of the sun. Jane’s blogpost about the harvest day here >>.  Weather mainly dry, sunny and warm. The odd light shower was forecast but didn’t materialise, 19C max. Grapes, clean, exceptional condition, no wasp, little bird damage, no disease.

Vinification:  Winemaker: Steve Brooksbank, Bagborough Lane, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 6SX. Crushing/pressing 18th Sep. Free-run juice: sugar 76 Oechsle, acid 8.5 g/l acid. Vinified in stainless steel tanks. Blended with the one barrique’s worth (225 litres, about 15%of the total) - of the same wine which had been barrel matured in our Seguin Moreau”Fraicheur” barrique to give a little extra structure. This barrique is specially made for light white varietals and has staves of very lightly toasted fine-grained French oak and heads of acacia wood to give a little extra brightness of flavour.
